Home Affairs no longer offers a self-service marital status check. The old SMS line on 32551 has been switched off and eHomeAffairs does not show your status, so the official route is a visit to a Home Affairs office. What the status values mean
Single means no marriage has ever been registered against the ID number. Married means a marriage is currently registered and has not been ended on the record. Divorced means a marriage was registered and a divorce has since been recorded. Widowed means the record shows the spouse as deceased.
The status reflects what is registered, not what is true on the ground. A customary marriage that was never registered will still read as single, and a divorce granted but not yet captured can still read as married. That gap is exactly why a dated report matters: it records what the official source said on the day you asked.

Can I check someone else's marital status?
Only with a lawful basis under POPIA - their consent, or a legitimate purpose such as a property transfer, a contract requiring spousal consent, or an estate you are administering. You declare that purpose at checkout and it is recorded against the order. Curiosity about another person is not a lawful basis.

Does the report name the spouse or give the marriage date?
No. This report returns the registered marital status plus the names, surname and date of birth that confirm you have the right person. If you need the marriage date as well, order the Enhanced ID Verification (Real-Time Home Affairs) report instead - it returns the full Home Affairs identity profile including marital status and marriage date.
Is this an official Home Affairs document?
It is our report of what the official source returned, generated on the date shown and carrying the reference trail. It is not a Home Affairs-issued certificate. If a court or a bank has asked you specifically for a marriage certificate or an unabridged certificate, you need to apply to the Department of Home Affairs for that document.
What if the status is wrong?
The report shows what is registered, so a wrong status means the registration itself is wrong - which is a Home Affairs correction, not a reporting error. Take the PDF with you: it is dated evidence of what the record said, which is the starting point for a correction or a fraudulent-marriage report. Home Affairs can be reached on 0800 60 11 90.
