Is the Green ID Book Still Valid?

As of 2026, the green ID book is still accepted as a valid form of identification within South Africa. The Department of Home Affairs has not set a final deadline for phasing it out, though they have repeatedly encouraged citizens to upgrade.

However, there are practical considerations:

• International travel: The green ID book cannot be used as a travel document. You need a passport (and increasingly, a smart ID card is required when applying for or renewing a passport).
• Banking and FICA: Most banks accept both, but some financial institutions may request the smart ID card for new account openings.
